Who are Munkar and Nakir?

Munkar and Nakir are the two angels who question a person in the grave soon after burial. They are named in a hadith reported by at-Tirmidhi. They ask three simple questions about your Lord, your religion and the Prophet ﷺ, and Allah helps the believer answer with confidence.
Who are they?
Muslims believe in angels as real beings created from light, so the grave's questioners are part of our belief in the unseen. The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person is buried, two angels come to him, "one of them is called Al-Munkar, and the other An-Nakir" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1071). In that narration they are described as black and blue-eyed.
Other narrations simply say "two angels" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1338). We don't know more than what has been reported, and scholars advise not to guess at details. For the wider picture of what the grave involves, see What happens in the grave in Islam?
What do they ask?
In the narration of al-Bara' ibn Azib, the angels make the person sit up and ask three things (Sunan Abi Dawud 4753):
- Who is your Lord? The believer answers: "My Lord is Allah."
- What is your religion? "My religion is Islam."
- What do you say about the man sent among you? "He is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
These questions are not a memory test. They reflect what a person truly believed and lived by in this life. The time between death and resurrection is called barzakh. See What is barzakh?
Allah helps the believer
Many scholars connect this verse to the questioning in the grave. It is a reassurance: Allah steadies the believer. In the narration, the believer's grave is then made wide and filled with light, and he is told to sleep peacefully "until Allah resurrects him" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1071).
Should a new Muslim worry?
No. You are not expected to have perfect knowledge, only sincere faith. The best preparation is simple: say the shahada with understanding, keep your prayers, and ask Allah for steadfastness.
