Who are the People of the Book?

Yes, it's a specific Quranic term. "People of the Book" (Ahl al-Kitab) is the Quran's name for Jews and Christians, the communities that received earlier scriptures from God, the Torah and the Gospel. Islam gives them a special, respected status, with specific rules about food, marriage and how Muslims should speak with them.
Where the name comes from
The Quran uses "People of the Scripture" or "People of the Book" dozens of times. It refers to those whose faith goes back to a revealed book: Jews (the Torah given to Moses) and Christians (the Gospel given to Jesus). Muslims believe in the original versions of these books as part of their own faith.
The Quran often speaks to them directly, as relatives in faith rather than strangers:
What makes their status special
- Food: "the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you" (Quran 5:5). Most scholars apply this to meat slaughtered by Jews and Christians, though they differ on the details today.
- Marriage: the same verse allows a Muslim man to marry a chaste Jewish or Christian woman. A Muslim woman marrying a Jewish or Christian man is not allowed, by consensus of the four schools. See Can a Muslim woman marry a Christian man?
- Dialogue: Muslims are told to discuss faith with them "in a way that is best" and to say, "our God and your God is one" (Quran 29:46). See Do Muslims and Christians believe in the same God?
- Protection: the Prophet ﷺ warned that whoever wrongs a non-Muslim living under a covenant with Muslims, or takes their rights, will face him as an opponent on the Day of Judgment (Sunan Abi Dawud 3052, graded sahih by al-Albani).
Not all the same
The Quran praises some People of the Book and criticizes others, depending on their actions. It says: "They are not [all] the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allah during periods of the night and prostrating" (Quran 3:113). Muslims are taught to judge people individually, not as a group.
Are other faiths included?
Scholars differ here. Zoroastrians (Magians) were treated like People of the Book for some legal purposes: Umar accepted the jizya tax from them after hearing that the Prophet ﷺ had done so with the Magians of Hajar (Sahih al-Bukhari 3157). Some scholars also discussed the Sabians mentioned in the Quran. But for food and marriage, the majority limits the term to Jews and Christians.
If you're married to a Christian and recently became Muslim, this status matters for you directly. See Can I stay married to my Christian wife after becoming Muslim?
- People of the Book means Jews and Christians.
- Their food and (for Muslim men) marriage are allowed with conditions.
- Muslims must speak with them kindly and protect their rights.
- The Quran judges them by their deeds, not as one group.
