Why can Muslim men marry Christians but women cannot?

Mostly because of how a marriage protects each spouse's faith. Muslims honour Moses, Jesus and the earlier scriptures, so a Muslim husband must respect his Christian or Jewish wife's beliefs. A non-Muslim husband has no such duty towards Islam. Scholars across the four schools agree on the ruling, and it is not about one gender being worth more.
What the rulings are
The Quran allows a Muslim man to marry a chaste woman from the People of the Book (Christians and Jews):
For women, the Quran says "do not marry your women to polytheistic men until they believe" (Quran 2:221), and that believing women are not lawful for disbelievers (Quran 60:10). Scholars apply this to all non-Muslim men, including Christians and Jews. This is why a Muslim woman needs a Muslim husband. See Can a Muslim woman marry a Christian man?
The reasons scholars give
- Respect for each other's faith: a Muslim husband believes in the prophets and scriptures that his wife follows, so she is not asked to give up anything she believes. A non-Muslim husband does not hold the same belief in Muhammad ﷺ or the Quran.
- Family leadership: traditional rulings give the husband the main responsibility for the household. Scholars say a Muslim woman under a non-Muslim husband could be pressured to compromise her practice.
- Children's upbringing: in many cultures children follow the father's faith and customs, so the wife's religion could be sidelined in the home.
- A condition for men: the Quran says "chaste" women, and the marriage must respect Islamic limits.
These are the explanations given by scholars, not extra rules. The ruling itself comes from the Quran and has the agreement of the scholars.
Is this unfair?
Islam teaches that men and women are equal before Allah, and that the best of people is the most mindful (Quran 49:13). The different rulings relate to roles and responsibilities in the family, not worth. Even so, scholars today often advise caution for men too, especially where children's faith is concerned. Some men marry women from the People of the Book happily, while others find it difficult. If you are considering it, speak with a knowledgeable imam. For women who are curious or new to Islam
If you are a Muslim woman, your choice is a Muslim husband, and that includes converts. Many convert women find supportive husbands through their community. For anyone married before conversion, different rules apply, so ask an imam. See Can a Muslim marry an atheist? for the related question about non-religious partners.

- A Muslim woman may marry only a Muslim man (Quran 2:221, Quran 60:10).
- The reasons given relate to respect for faith, family leadership and children.
- Men and women are equal before Allah; the rulings concern roles, not worth.
