Why do Muslims take off their shoes in the mosque?

Muslims take off their shoes in the mosque to keep the prayer area clean, because they put their foreheads on the floor in sujood. It's also a sign of respect for a place of worship. Praying in clean shoes is actually allowed in Islam, but carpeted mosques ask everyone to remove them.

Cleanliness: the floor is where we pray

In Muslim prayer, your forehead, nose, palms, knees and toes touch the ground. Prayer also needs a clean place, free of impurities like urine or dog mess. Street shoes pick up all sorts of dirt, and most mosques today have soft carpets that are hard to wash. Leaving shoes at the door keeps the whole floor clean for everyone, so nobody has to wonder whether their spot is pure.

Respect for a sacred place

Taking off shoes as a sign of respect is an old tradition among prophets. When Allah spoke to Moses (Musa) at the burning bush, He told him:

إِنِّىٓ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكَ فَٱخْلَعْ نَعْلَيْكَ ۖ إِنَّكَ بِٱلْوَادِ ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى "Indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa." Quran 20:12

Many cultures share this habit at home, in temples and in other holy places. Muslims see the mosque the same way: a house of Allah where you come in calm and humble.

But the Prophet ﷺ prayed in sandals

This surprises many people. The Prophet ﷺ did sometimes pray in his sandals (Sahih al-Bukhari 386). The floor of his mosque was sand and pebbles, not carpet. He once took his sandals off during the prayer because Jibril told him there was dirt on them, and he told people to check their sandals before entering the mosque (Sunan Abi Dawud 650). So shoes are not forbidden in themselves; what matters is that they are clean. On grass or outdoors, many Muslims still pray in clean shoes. See Can I pray with my shoes on?

What to expect at the door

  • Shoe racks or cubbies near the entrance; some mosques give out bags.
  • Socks are fine to keep on, and clean socks are a kindness to others.
  • Slip-on shoes make Friday rush hours much easier.
  • Visitors, Muslim or not, are asked to do the same. See Can I visit a mosque if I'm not Muslim?
