Why do Shia Muslims mourn on Ashura?

Shia Muslims mourn on Ashura because it is the day Husayn ibn Ali, the Prophet's ﷺ grandson, was killed with his family and companions at Karbala in 680 CE. For Shia Muslims his death stands for standing up to injustice, and they remember it with gatherings, sermons, poems and processions. Sunni Muslims also honor Husayn, but mark Ashura mainly by fasting.
What happened at Karbala
Ashura is the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. In the year 61 AH (680 CE), Husayn refused to give his pledge to the ruler Yazid, whom he saw as unjust. On his way to Kufa in Iraq, he and a small group, including women and children, were surrounded at Karbala, cut off from water and killed. His head was taken to Damascus, and the women of his family were taken captive.
All Muslims see this as a deep tragedy. The Prophet ﷺ loved Hasan and Husayn dearly and called them the leaders of the youth of Paradise (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3768).
How Shia Muslims mark it
- Majalis: gatherings in the first ten days of Muharram where the story of Karbala is told and its lessons explained.
- Poetry and lament: elegies (marsiya, latmiya) recited with deep emotion.
- Processions: public marches, often in black, sometimes with symbolic coffins or banners.
- Charity: free food and water handed out, recalling the thirst at Karbala.
For Shia Muslims, grieving for Husayn is a way of loving the Prophet's ﷺ family and renewing a commitment to justice. Some groups practice chest-beating, and a small minority practice bloodletting, but many senior Shia scholars have discouraged or forbidden practices that harm the body.
How Sunni Muslims mark it
Sunni Muslims mourn the loss of Husayn too, but do not hold yearly mourning rituals. They mark Ashura mainly by fasting, because the Prophet ﷺ fasted it and said it expiates the sins of the previous year (Sahih Muslim 1162). Sunni scholars point out that loud wailing and self-harm in grief are discouraged: "He is not one of us who slaps his cheeks and tears his clothes" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1294). What this means for a convert
