Why is the Eid prayer held outdoors?

The Eid prayer is held outdoors because that's what the Prophet ﷺ did. He left his own mosque and led Eid in an open prayer ground called the musalla, so the whole town could gather in one place. Praying outside is the Sunnah, but praying Eid in a mosque or hall is perfectly valid, especially in bad weather.
The Prophet ﷺ prayed Eid in the open
The Companion Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha the Prophet ﷺ went out to the musalla, began with the prayer, and then stood facing the people to give his sermon (Sahih al-Bukhari 956). This is striking, because a prayer in his mosque in Madinah is worth a thousand prayers elsewhere (Sahih al-Bukhari 1190). He still chose the open field for Eid, which tells us the gathering itself was the point.
Why the open space matters
- Everyone fits. Eid brings out the whole community at once: men, women, children, the elderly and visitors.
- Women and girls come too. The Prophet ﷺ told women to come out to Eid, including those on their period, who stayed away from the prayer rows but joined the good and the dua (Sahih al-Bukhari 974). An outdoor ground isn't a mosque, so this is easy.
- It's a public celebration. Hearing the takbir from a park or field shows the joy of Eid openly. See What is the Eid takbir and when do I say it?
What scholars say about mosque vs outdoors
The majority (Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali) say the open prayer ground is the Sunnah, except in Makkah, where Eid is prayed in the Sacred Mosque. Many Shafi'i scholars say a large mosque that fits everyone is just as good or better. All agree the prayer is valid in either place, and that rain, cold or safety are good reasons to move indoors.
Outdoor Eid in Europe and the USA
Western Muslims often rent a park, a sports field or a stadium car park for Eid, and move into a leisure centre or conference hall when it rains. Big cities may have several sessions at different times. Bring a prayer mat or a clean sheet, dress for the weather, and arrive early to find the women's or family area. See How do I pray the Eid prayer? and Can women go to the Eid prayer?
- The Prophet ﷺ prayed Eid in an open ground, not his mosque.
- The aim is to gather the whole community, women included.
- Most schools see outdoors as the Sunnah; some Shafi'is prefer a big mosque.
- Praying indoors is fine, especially in bad weather.
