Will I be with my non-Muslim spouse in Jannah?

It depends on how your spouse's life ends, and only Allah knows that. The Quran promises that believers will enter Jannah together with the righteous among their spouses. A spouse who dies without faith would not be there, but while they are alive the door is open, and no one can know another person's end. Keep hoping, keep being kind and keep making dua.

What the Quran promises

Many converts worry about this, and it is a loving worry. The Quran says the people of Jannah enter it together with their righteous families:

جَنَّـٰتُ عَدْنٍ يَدْخُلُونَهَا وَمَن صَلَحَ مِنْ ءَابَآئِهِمْ وَأَزْوَٰجِهِمْ وَذُرِّيَّـٰتِهِمْ "the Gardens of Eternity, which they will enter along with the righteous among their parents, spouses, and descendants" Quran 13:23

So a spouse who comes to believe in Allah and dies as a Muslim is promised to be with you. Being together in Jannah is a promise to believers. See Is there marriage in Jannah?

What if my spouse never accepts Islam?

Mainstream Sunni scholars teach that entering Jannah depends on dying with faith in Allah. Each person is judged by their own belief and deeds, and love or marriage alone does not carry someone in. That can be painful to hear, so it helps to remember three things:

  • You do not know your spouse's ending. Many people have come to Islam late in life, even after decades.
  • Guidance belongs to Allah. The Quran told the Prophet ﷺ that he could not guide whoever he liked, but Allah guides whom He wills (Quran 28:56). Your duty is to be sincere and kind, not to force faith.
  • Allah is perfectly just and merciful. He will wrong no one, and He knows each heart better than we do.

Your faith is not harmed by your spouse's disbelief

The Quran gives a striking example of a believing woman married to a tyrant, the wife of Pharaoh:

ٱمْرَأَتَ فِرْعَوْنَ إِذْ قَالَتْ رَبِّ ٱبْنِ لِى عِندَكَ بَيْتًا فِى ٱلْجَنَّةِ وَنَجِّنِى مِن فِرْعَوْنَ وَعَمَلِهِۦ "the wife of Pharaoh, who prayed, 'My Lord! Build me a house in Paradise near You, deliver me from Pharaoh and his [evil] doing'" Quran 66:11

Her husband's disbelief did not stop her from reaching Allah's pleasure. Your own place with Allah depends on your faith and deeds, so your worship is not wasted because your husband or wife has not yet joined you.

What you can do now

  • Be the best example of honesty, patience and good character.
  • Make sincere dua for your spouse's guidance, and ask Allah to keep your hearts together.
  • Share Islam gently when the moment is right, without pressure.

Key points
  • Believers enter Jannah with the righteous among their spouses (Quran 13:23).
  • A spouse who dies without faith would not be there, but only Allah knows anyone's end.
  • Guidance is from Allah alone (Quran 28:56).
  • Your faith is not harmed by your spouse's choice (Quran 66:11).
Tip: Make a regular dua for your spouse, such as "O Allah, guide my husband/wife to the truth and keep us together in goodness." Keep it private and keep hoping.
