No, nobody will have to work in Jannah: there is no labor, tiredness or need to earn a living. But people won't be idle either. They can enjoy activities they love, and one hadith even describes a man who asks to farm in Paradise and gets his harvest instantly.

No toil and no tiredness

In this world we work to eat, pay rent and support our families. In Jannah all of that is already provided. The people of Paradise thank Allah, saying:

لَا يَمَسُّنَا فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَلَا يَمَسُّنَا فِيهَا لُغُوبٌ "...There touches us not in it any fatigue, and there touches us not in it weariness." Quran 35:35

Another verse says no fatigue will touch them there and they will never be removed from it (Quran 15:48). So no alarm clocks, no commute, no deadlines, no worrying about losing your job.

The man who wanted to farm

The Prophet ﷺ described a man in Paradise who asks Allah for permission to plant crops. Allah asks, "Don't you already have everything you want?" He says yes, but he loves farming. He sows the seed, and in the blink of an eye it sprouts, ripens and is harvested, piled up like mountains (Sahih al-Bukhari 2348).

This hadith shows something beautiful: if you love an activity for its own sake, you may still be able to enjoy it, but without the effort, the risk or the waiting. It is a hobby, not a job.

What will people do all day?

  • Enjoy blessings: food, drink, gardens, rivers and homes. See What is Jannah?
  • Spend time with loved ones who also enter Paradise. See Will I see my family in Jannah?
  • Praise Allah, which will come as naturally as breathing, not as a duty.
  • See Allah, the greatest blessing of all, mentioned in Quran 75:22-23.

So does work matter now?

Very much. Honest work in this life, done with good intention, is rewarded, and the believer's effort here is what "builds" their place there. The tiredness you feel after a long shift for halal income is not wasted. Think of this life as the working week and Jannah as the rest that never ends. See What are the levels of Jannah?

Key points
  • No one has to work or earn a living in Jannah.
  • There is no fatigue or weariness there (Quran 35:35).
  • Activities people love may be enjoyed without effort (Sahih al-Bukhari 2348).
  • Halal work done with good intention now is rewarded.
Tip: Before your shift, quietly make the intention to work for Allah's sake and to support your family. It turns an ordinary workday into worship, and makes the promise of a rest without tiredness feel very close.
