Yes, the Quran shows that people in Jannah will remember their life on earth. They talk about their past, recognise their families and even recall old friends. What they won't carry is pain: Allah removes grudges and sorrow from their hearts, so memories no longer hurt.

The people of Jannah talk about their past

The Quran describes the people of Paradise turning to one another and asking about their lives, then recalling how they used to feel in this world:

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبْلُ فِىٓ أَهْلِنَا مُشْفِقِينَ "They will say, 'Indeed, we were previously among our people fearful [of displeasing Allah].'" Quran 52:26

In Surah as-Saffat, a man in Jannah remembers a friend from his worldly life who mocked the idea of resurrection (Quran 37:50-57). So memory isn't wiped; it's part of the conversation of Paradise.

You'll recognise your family

Allah promises to join believers with their righteous parents, spouses and children in the Gardens (Quran 13:23), and to raise believing children to the level of their parents (Quran 52:21). Reunion only makes sense if people know each other. See Will I see my family in Jannah?

But painful memories lose their sting

Allah says He will remove whatever resentment is in their hearts (Quran 7:43 and 15:47). The Prophet ﷺ described a man who had the hardest life in this world being dipped once into Paradise. When asked, "Have you ever seen hardship?" he will say, "No, my Lord, I never saw hardship" (Sahih Muslim 2807). Scholars explain that the past is still known, but the joy of Jannah so outweighs it that it no longer feels like suffering.

This is a real comfort for converts who carry a difficult past. Islam already wipes out the sins of your life before Islam; see Are all my sins forgiven when I become Muslim?

Things we don't know

  • Exactly how memory works in Jannah is part of the unseen; we affirm what the texts say and leave the rest to Allah.
  • The Quran says the believers will have "whatever they desire" there (Quran 50:35), so nothing will be missing.
  • For a general picture of Paradise, see What is Jannah?
Key points
  • People in Jannah remember and talk about their earthly life.
  • Families who believed are reunited and recognise each other.
  • Allah removes grudges and pain, so memories don't hurt.
  • One dip in Jannah makes a lifetime of hardship feel like nothing (Muslim 2807).
Tip: If you're going through a hard season, write down the good deeds you're doing now. The Quran shows the people of Jannah looking back on exactly these moments with gratitude.
