Will we see Allah in Jannah?

Yes, according to mainstream Sunni belief, the believers will see Allah in Jannah. The Quran and authentic hadith describe it, and scholars call it the greatest blessing of Paradise. No one sees Allah in this life, but in the Hereafter the people of Jannah will look at their Lord.

What the Quran says

Describing the Day of Resurrection, the Quran speaks of radiant faces looking at their Lord:

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ "[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord." Quran 75:22-23

Another verse says, "For those who have done good is the best [reward] and extra" (Quran 10:26). The Prophet ﷺ explained the "extra" as seeing Allah.

What the Prophet ﷺ said

On a night of the full moon, the Prophet ﷺ looked at the moon and told his Companions: "You will see your Lord as you see this moon, and you will not have any trouble seeing Him" (Sahih al-Bukhari 554). The comparison is about how clear the sight will be, not about Allah resembling the moon.

He ﷺ also said that when the people of Paradise have entered it, Allah will ask whether they want anything more. They will say, "Haven't You brightened our faces, admitted us to Paradise and saved us from the Fire?" Then the veil will be lifted, and they will have been given nothing more beloved to them than looking at their Lord (Sahih Muslim 181).

Why we can't see Him now

When Prophet Musa asked to see Allah, he was told, "You will not see Me" (Quran 7:143), and the mountain crumbled when Allah manifested Himself to it. Our bodies in this world can't bear it. In Jannah, believers are given a new strength. Scholars also discussed whether the Prophet ﷺ saw Allah during the Night Journey; Aisha held that he did not. See What is Isra and Mi'raj?

A note on different views

Ahl al-Sunnah, across all four madhhabs, affirm the seeing of Allah without asking "how" and without likening Him to creation. Some early theological groups, such as the Mu'tazila, denied it, but the majority of scholars rejected their view based on the verses and the many authentic hadith above.

This sight is the peak of Jannah, above the gardens, rivers and palaces. See What is Jannah? and What are the levels of Jannah?

Key points
  • Believers will see Allah in the Hereafter (Quran 75:22-23).
  • It will be as clear as seeing the full moon (Bukhari 554).
  • It is the most beloved blessing of Jannah (Muslim 181).
